A player walks onto the field with fifteen minutes left before the whistle, and everyone assumes the game starts later.

It doesn’t. It has already started.

The first sprint hasn’t happened yet. The scoreboard is still clean. The crowd is still settling. But the body is already making decisions. The nervous system is either waking up or staying sluggish. The hips are either ready to rotate or not. The mind is either narrowing into the job or still carrying whatever happened in the car, the locker room, the hallway, or the last bad performance.

I’ve spent 25 years in technology and entrepreneurship, which is why I don’t look at pre-game as a ritual. I look at it as a system. Most people think a warm-up is what athletes do before the real work.

It’s the wrong way to see it. The warm-up is the first piece of the real work.

Fifteen minutes is enough if it has a job

A bad pre-game routine is usually too random. Jog a little. Stretch whatever feels tight. Take a few shots. Swing a racquet. Bounce the ball. Chat. Check a phone. Pretend the body will figure it out once the game starts.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes the first five minutes become a tax — late reactions, heavy legs, bad timing, a serve that feels rushed, a shoulder that doesn’t feel awake, a decision that arrives half a second too slow.

That isn’t always talent. Sometimes it’s preparation.

A good fifteen-minute routine doesn’t try to do everything. It gives each minute a job: raise temperature, open movement, activate the muscles that stabilize the athlete, add rhythm, add speed, add sport-specific choices, and bring the mind into the match before the first point or whistle makes that decision for the athlete.

That’s the reframe. Don’t warm up because someone told you to. Warm up because the first competitive moment deserves a body and brain that have already been introduced to the game.

Minutes 0 to 3: raise the system

The first three minutes shouldn’t be dramatic. They should be boring enough to work.

Light jog. Skips. Side shuffles. Easy backpedal. Jump rope. Bike. Court movement. Anything that raises temperature without stealing energy.

The goal isn’t fatigue. The goal is permission. The body needs blood flow. The joints need movement. The brain needs a clear signal that the day has changed from waiting to competing. Static stretching alone doesn’t do that well enough for most explosive sports; dynamic movement prepares the athlete for movement by actually moving.

That seems obvious. It took sports a long time to admit it. The old model treated the warm-up like loosening a rope — hold the stretch, wait, and hope. The better model treats the athlete like an operating system coming online. Temperature rises. Signals sharpen. Coordination improves. The body stops being surprised by impact, rotation, deceleration, and acceleration.

That first three minutes isn’t filler. It’s the boot sequence.

Minutes 3 to 7: activate what protects you

This is where the routine gets specific. Glutes. Core. Calves. Hips. Shoulders. Ankles. Hamstrings. Groin. Scapular control. The exact mix depends on the sport, the athlete, the position, and the history sitting inside that body.

A basketball guard doesn’t need the same emphasis as a goalkeeper. A tennis player doesn’t need the same shoulder prep as a soccer midfielder. A pickleball player needs quick feet and deceleration. A golfer needs rotation and sequencing. A sprinter needs stiffness and power. A field athlete needs repeated acceleration, braking, and direction change.

The point isn’t to do every exercise anyone has ever posted. The point is to wake up the parts that will carry the risk.

The body likes previews, and so does the brain. If the match demands lateral movement, the warm-up shouldn’t stay linear. If the sport demands rotation, the warm-up shouldn’t be all straight-line jogging. If the athlete has to decelerate, the warm-up has to include braking. If the athlete has to react, the warm-up has to include a decision.

The mistake is treating pre-game like a checklist instead of a bridge. The athlete is crossing from general readiness into specific competition, and that bridge has to match the destination.

Minutes 11 to 14: add speed without adding panic

The final physical layer is controlled intensity. Not exhaustion. Sharpness.

A few short bursts. A few reactive movements. A few sport-specific actions at game speed. The athlete needs to feel the gear change before the game forces it.

This is where too many routines go wrong in opposite directions. Some stay too soft, and the athlete enters the game undercooked. Some go too hard, and the athlete spends readiness before the first play. The right routine creates a small spark and then stops.

That’s hard for competitive people. They want to feel like they did enough. They want sweat as proof. They want a dramatic build. But pre-game isn’t a workout. It’s preparation for the workout that counts.

The best final three minutes often look restrained from the outside. Inside the athlete, the system is now faster, the timing is clearer, and the body has rehearsed force without burning through the match before it begins.

That’s the line. Ready, not tired.

Minutes 14 to 15: make the mind pick one job

The last minute is where I think most routines fail. The body has moved, but the mind is still scattered.

A player is thinking about the opponent, the crowd, the last mistake, the coach, the parent, the scout, the ranking, the weather, the bad sleep, the sore knee, the person who texted too late, the point they can’t afford to lose.

That’s too many tabs open.

The final minute should reduce the match to one job. Not ten goals. One. Win the first step. See the ball longer. Own the first contact. Stay low through the first exchange. Breathe before the serve. Attack the open shoulder. Keep the feet active. Trust the pattern.

One job gives the brain a handle.

AI can help here if it’s used correctly. Not by shouting motivation. Not by generating slogans. By helping teams understand what actually works for that athlete under pressure. The routine is a question

A pre-game routine should answer one question: what does this athlete need to be ready for the first real moment?

Not what looks impressive. Not what everyone else is doing. Not what feels traditional. What does this athlete need?

For some, it’s more activation. For others, more rhythm. For some, movement confidence after injury. For others, calming the nervous system. For some, rehearsing a tactical pattern. For others, simply feeling the body become familiar again after travel, poor sleep, stress, or a long week.
